Peter Lehamann Publishing – Peter Lehmann uses his own early life experiences with the mental health system to support others wishing to reclaim their own lives. He was a presenter at the Alternatives 2011 Conference in Orlando. This link will take you to his website where you can view the books he has written on safely withdrawing from these powerful drugs and creating a life beyond diagnosis.
The Harm Reduction Manual for safe reduction/withdrawal compiled by Will Hall is one of the most referenced and comprehensive tools available. This manual is an easy read and packed full of valuable information for anyone considering embarking on this journey. Free to read and download.
SurvivingAntidepressants.org provides volunteer peer support for antidepressant withdrawal, while tapering and after you quit. Gradually tapering off the medication is the only known way to reduce the risk of prolonged withdrawal syndrome. Don’t risk the integrity of your nervous system — unless you have intolerable side effects, do not risk suddenly stopping any psychiatric medication.
Beyond Meds this site is THE most complete resource I know of regarding both withdrawing from psych drugs and learning how to make sense of the world and all the craziness in it. Many tabs with many many resoruces and articles and I have been honored to share some of my story and other pieces there. I cannot speak highly enough about this resource. The Blogs author? Has been on all sides of the table from social worker for many years to now in the midst of withdrawals. Amazing individual. Amazing resource.
Benzo withdrawal providers list here at Benzodoc.com This is a list of global resources for those needing help to safely withdraw from benzodiazapenes. I do not have personal experience with anyone on this list so if you have a good or negative experience with anyone on it I’d love to know about it.
Psychiatric Medication Awareness Group Psychiatric Medication Awareness Group (PMAG) is a small group of British Columbia citizens concerned about the increasing use of psychiatric drugs in B.C. and Canada, and the potential harm associated with these drugs. PMAG is also concerned about the dramatic increase in the prescribing of psychiatric drugs to the general population in Canada, particularly to women. This massive health crisis has been largely ignored, and its social and human costs are inadequately researched and largely unquantified. PMAG believes that every citizen should be well-informed about every psychiatric medication they are advised to take, so that they can make responsible decisions about their own health. Informed and empowered citizens are able to take charge of their own lives.
Coming Off this is a new website that I recently discovered and while it looks really good my disclaimer, as always, is to use your own best judgement; what feels right for you?
Safe Harbor This organization presents itself as “the world’s largest site on non-drug approaches for mental health.” I do not have personal experience with them but in perusing their site they do look to have an abundance of resources and – they do not ascribe to the idea that one is “sick for life” but that through holistic and alternative options one can heal themselves from what has been labeled as “mental illness”.
Beyond Meds – real information on the reality of life, well-being, pharmaceuticals…the best and most comprehensive resource online that I’ve found for learning to live beyond psychiatry…yes. This site is listed twice – because it is that good.
Paula J. Caplan, PhD and Psychdiagnosis – Dr Caplan is passionate to share the message of who and how others decide who is “mentally ill” and the damage done by diagnosis and labeling the human condition of emotional and cognitive distress and “illness”.
KIP Central – Knowledge is truly where we find our own personal power to create the kinds of changes that can set us free from uncertainty and dependence. Here you will find activism, articles and rants about the changing face of psychiatry and the mental health system. Current articles and advocacy to provide uncensored information on whats happening in and around psychiatry.
You can’t Heal When you Call Parts of Yourself an Illness (via Recovery from Schizophrenia) This particular page is here because it is what I believe to be the crux of what keeps us stuck in the “illness” paradigm. When I began to see myself as a human being I began to understand that I was not “ill” but that I’d been wounded and my mind helped me to survive but also – that those survival tactics were not so helpful any more.

Inpatient Resources; USA – I’ve not had personal experience with these facilities but they may be an option to investigate for your own personal needs.
Overcoming Extreme States of Being – psychosis, paranoia, mania’s….the extreme states of being that are normal reactions to extreme life experiences are often used in psychiatry to mark an individual with the label of “serious mental illness”. Yet – it is in learning to see ourselves beyond this definition that we often begin to make sense and meaning of these experiences. Below are some resources where you can begin to find an new way of looking at and finding a new understanding of these experiences.
Cultivating Mindful Awareness for personal growth and development – learning to live in a state of awareness is the opposite of living in avoidance that is often the source of emotional distress and the “disorder” behind the labels. The resources here are not meant to be a “cure all” but rather a resource to help educate yourself on the concept of learning to empower ourselves through learning that it is possible to learn to become a self manager of our thoughts and in turn create a place of well-being that comes from within.UCLA Mindfulness Research Center – Cultivating the practice takes time and the science behind it has been the focus of this University for years.
Elisha Goldstein – a Psychologist who specializes in supporting individuals in learning to practice mindful awareness for well-being.
